March Curriculum: Energy Work

March feels like the first real stirring of movement after a few months of stillness and darkness. Something is slowly waking up, not all at once, not loudly, but unmistakably. After creating containers for our grimoire/book of shadows/journaling practice in February, this month we’re going to gently explore what moves through those containers and everything around us.

This month, we’re going to work with energy. You probably already sense energy in subtle ways, through emotions, intuition, or boundaries, and this month will give us language and practices to support that growing awareness.

Nothing needs to be dramatic. Energy work often shows up quietly, but I view it as the true foundation of everything and it sets us up for the rest of the year…and honestly, for most spiritual practices in general.

The Energetic & Seasonal Context of March

Before we get to how to work with energy, let’s dig into what the energy of March brings. March provides us with a threshold..it marks the transition from winter into early spring. A time when light increases (finally), motivation stirs, and systems begin to shift.

Energetically, this month often brings:

  • Increased motion, both physically and energetically
  • A desire to clear stagnation
  • Moments of both restlessness and renewal

Seasonally, March is closely linked with themes of balance and emergence. The Wheel of the Year often highlights this as a turning point, where light and dark begin to rebalance as we’re still in Imbolc season part of the month then we begin Ostara season on the equinox. Astrologically, we usually move from the intuitive, porous energy of Pisces into the initiating spark of Aries. You might notice yourself feeling more open and dreamy at first, then more energized or assertive as the month goes on.

This makes March a powerful, but delicate, time to learn how to work with energy consciously, without overwhelm.

Learning to feel, protect, and trust your energy. Rather than trying to manipulate energy, this month is about our relationship with energy and our own energetic body.

Week One: Opening and Closing Ceremony

What We’re Exploring This Week

In the first week of March I wanted to go back through rituals for opening and closing sacred space. To me, this means setting up a way to intentionally let myself know that I am entering (or leaving) a place where I want to be fully present and available to whatever energy I’m calling in or working with.

The person I learned this from initially was Rebecca Campbell (you might start to notice, she was a big influence on my early spiritual journey and a lot of what she taught stuck with me). She has a blog post where she walks through how she opens and closes her soul space that I think is a really great starting place to get an idea of how you’d like to intentionally begin/end your practices.

This week would be a great time to find a quiet place and see what feels good to you when you want to enter your sacred space. For me, it’s often going into my third eye and crown energy centers and just imagining the spaces are opening clockwise and allowing energy to flow freely through me. Then when I am done with whatever practice/ritual I was doing, I visualize those centers closing counterclockwise.

Grimoire Page for the Week

Page Title Idea: Opening and Closing Sacred Space Rituals

What to include:

  • How openness feels in my body
  • How closure feels in my body
  • What rituals feel good for opening ceremonies (this could be step-by-step or more vague)
  • What rituals feel good for closing ceremonies (how do I know the practice is ready to be set aside for the moment and return my energy to daily tasks)
  • Signs that my energy wants to open or close
  • Reflections on what feels supportive right now

This page gets to be descriptive, not prescriptive and allowing it to change over time or with different practices.

Ritual or Practice for the Week

Practice: Opening and Closing Check-In

At the start and end of each day, I pause for a few moments and imagine my energy gently opening or closing like a door, a veil, or a window.

I silently ask:

What state feels right for me right now? Does this practice feel expansive or restrictive to me? If it feels restrictive, how can it be changed or what can I sit with to understand why it feels that way?

There’s no “correct” answer. The noticing is the practice.

Week Two: Cleansing and Grounding

What We’re Exploring This Week

This week, I’m exploring different cleansing and grounding rituals. I’m noticing when I feel like I need to clear something away, and when what I actually need is to come back into my body.

Rather than dramatic resets, I’m focusing on simple, repeatable acts of care. This week is about tending my energy regularly so it doesn’t build up or scatter unnoticed.

Page Title Idea: Cleansing vs. Grounding

What to include:

  • What cleansing feels like for me
  • What grounding feels like for me
  • Practices that help me release energy
  • Practices that help me feel rooted and present
  • Signs that tell me which one I need

I’m treating this page as a reference I can return to.

Ritual or Practice for the Week

Practice: Clear and Root

Choose one gentle cleansing practice and one grounding practice. After any emotional or energetic interaction, try pairing them together.

Clear first. Then ground.

I’m noticing how my body responds when I don’t skip the grounding step.

My favorite quick way to do this is to do something called an energy sweep (I learned this from my first spiritual teachers) – you take your hands and sweep across your body, imagining that you are removing anything that no longer belongs to you from you and returning it to the earth. Then once you feel like you’ve cleared/cleansed enough, you can imagine a beautiful green light coming up from the center of the earth and attaching to your feet or to your root chakra and replenishing you and recharging you. When you feel grounded you can either detach from the green light with gratitude (what I like to do) or you can remain tethered to the earth and keep the line open,

Week Three: Reiki and Energy Centers

What We’re Exploring This Week

This week, I’m listening more closely to my energetic body. I’m exploring Reiki and energy centers as awareness practices, not as systems I need to understand perfectly. As a Reiki III practitioner I’ve learned that, for me, reiki and energy centers do not need to be completely understood to serve as a spiritual foundation. You do not need all of the technical information to connect, observe, and interact with your own energetic centers. Instead, being present with them and open to experiencing them is enough,

I’m paying attention to sensation, warmth, tension, or quiet. I’m allowing my experience to be subjective and personal, trusting that my body knows how to communicate if I give it space.

Page Title Idea: Energy Center Correspondences

What to include:

  • Traditional Correspondences:
    • Location, themes, phrases
  • Personal Correspondences:
    • Associations, how to connect with each, how to support each, how to know when an energy center needs attention

Ritual or Practice for the Week

Practice: Energy Center Journaling

Grab your daily journal and open your sacred space, once you’re there go through each energy center and notice what comes up or how it feels. You don’t have to focus on what to do about the feelings, just noticing is enough.

Week Four: Creating Your Heart Space

What We’re Exploring This Week

In week four of March, I want us to create a place we can consciously return to. This is my favorite practice for tuning into my energy, restoring it, and creating a playful way to approach energy work. This is the practice of creating and then curating a heart space. To me, this is a place where I visualize going within my own energetic body that holds all of my spiritual practices – it’s a place where I can meet with spirit guides, practice reiki, meditate, visit with ancestors or my inner child, or just practice playing in the energetic realm.

This week my hope for you is to get creative and go into your heart space and start creating a world that feels cozy and homey for you to start spending time in. I have a post that walks you through exactly how to do this practice here: Create Your Heart Meditation Space.

Page Title Idea: My Heart Space

What to include:

  • What my heart space feels like
  • Images, colors, or symbols that come to mind
  • Words that feel heart-aligned
  • What helps me feel emotionally safe
  • What gently closes my heart
  • If you are artistic (I wish I was) draw your space as it is today

This page feels like a place to return to, not complete.

Ritual or Practice for the Week

Practice: Visit Your Meditation Space Daily

After you’ve created your heart space, return to it each day for several minutes and see what you notice. Are things constantly shifting and moving? Or are you always returning to the same space? What feels aligned there? What doesn’t? Can you meet a spirit guide in this space (maybe even assign them somewhere within this space to ‘live’ so you can return to visit them again).

Again, if you haven’t created a space yet, check out this post to walk through how I like to help people create their sacred heart space.

Journal Prompts for March

You can return to these anytime this month:

  • How does my body communicate energy to me?
  • Where do I feel most energetically at ease?
  • How do my energetic practices feel?
  • What helps me feel safe while staying open?
  • How do I know when it’s time to close sacred space?
  • What energetic rituals and practices serve me best right now?

Book Recommendation for March

Here are two books if you are interested in more information on reiki and energy centers. I personally use my energy centers as my foundation of my spiritual practices and then build on them. If you have book recommendations for energy work, shout them out in the comments below.

The Art of Psychic Reiki: Developing Your Intuitive and Empathic Abilities for Energy Healing

Chakra Healing: A Beginner’s Guide to Self-Healing Techniques that Balance the Chakras

Moving Forward Together

Now that we have a foundation of how our energetic body works, next month, we’ll begin exploring spirit guides and spiritual identity. For now, it’s enough to notice how energy moves and how gently it asks to be cared for.
