Kicking off the first month of our witchy curriculum for the year is the quiet beginning of January. I plan on treating this month like opening a brand-new grimoire—slowly, reverently, and without pressure to fill every page (and honestly, I probably will start a new grimoire for this year). This is not a month for doing more magic. It’s a month for remembering who I am as a witch.
In this curriculum, January is devoted to foundation-setting: clarifying my spiritual identity, defining my values, and choosing how I want my practice to feel this year.
**Before we continue, I just want to add a note that I’ll be doing this year alongside you all, so you might see themes change or evolve as we go through the year. If you have ideas for the month you’re reading or future months, please share in the comments and we can work through this curriculum together.
The Core Theme of January
Remembering Who I Am as a Witch
Rather than setting rigid goals, I focus on intention and feeling.
My guiding ideas:
- Identity shapes practice
- Intention is energetic alignment, not obligation
- Clarity creates spaciousness
This month is about listening before acting.

Supplies for January’s Curriculum:
Feel free to adjust to what interests you or how you’d like to track and log your own curriculum. My plan is to reread a book each month (or find a new one) and create a new grimoire
- Books:
- Grimoire Supplies:
- Paperage Dotted Journal Notebook – I have several extras of these and like the size a lot for grimoires that I’m mostly using as journals and not decorating too much (at least, I’m not planning on decorating it a ton)
- Glitter Gel Pens – My favorite pens
- I have more posts about creating grimoires (both digital and physical) if you’re just getting started for the first time.
Weekly Learning Flow for January
Week One: Reflection & Closure from the Previous Year
Before beginning anything new, let’s make space to close the old.
Learning focus:
- Reviewing the past year without judgment
- Naming growth, challenges, and changes
- Recognizing what no longer fits
Practices:
- Gentle year-in-review journaling
- Creating a list of lessons learned
- A quiet release ritual using breath or candlelight

- What changed me most last year?
- What practices felt nourishing/I want to do again?
- What am I ready to leave behind?
Grimoire ideas:
- “Lessons of the Past Year” page
- Practices and beliefs I’m releasing and why
- Symbols or words that represent closure to me (it could even just be the end of the year, or the waning moon…whatever makes sense to you)
Week Two: Spiritual Identity & Personal Path
This week is about naming my path in my own language.
Learning focus:
- How I define witchcraft for myself
- Influences that shape my practice
- What makes my path feel authentic to me (or what feels icky and wrong)
Practices:
- Writing a personal definition of witchcraft
- Reflecting on traditions, ideas, or practices that resonate
- Exploring what I don’t connect with—and honoring that
Reflection:
- How would I describe my practice to myself?
- What feels essential versus optional?
- Where do I feel most aligned spiritually? Are there directions I’m being pulled in?
Grimoire ideas:
- “My Path as a Witch” overview
- Spiritual influences map, list out who/what you’re inspired by
- Boundaries around practices that don’t resonate.

Week Three: Values, Ethics & Energetic Boundaries
This week grounds my practice in integrity.

- “What I Say Yes To / What I Say No To” spread
Week Four: Intention, Orientation & Gentle Visioning
Only now do I turn toward the year ahead.

- Allowing flexibility and evolution (be open to this changing throughout the year)
Practices:
- Selecting a word, symbol, or feeling for the year
- Writing intentions that focus on presence, not productivity
- Creating a simple ritual to anchor the year

January Reflection Questions
At the close of the month, I pause again.
Reflection:
- What clarity did January bring?
- How does my practice feel now compared to before?
- What foundations feel strongest?
- What am I excited about learning this year?
January Anchor Grimoire Pages
We can end January with a few grounding pages:
- “Who I Am as a Witch Right Now”
- Core values and boundaries
- Intentions and themes for the year ahead
These pages become a touchstone—something that can be returned to whenever you feel lost, scattered, or unsure.

How January Supports the Rest of the Year
January doesn’t rush us forward. It roots us. Everything we’ll explore later…intuition, creativity, ritual, power…rests on the clarity we cultivate here. This month reminds us that your practice doesn’t need to be impressive. It needs to be true to you.
And please remember, we’re in the middle of winter, do not push yourself to take too much action this month (or honestly, until March/April). Now is the time to rest, plan, and dream.
Let me know in the comments if you’re joining for January and the year.
-you’re doing great!
